Which Network Is Your MVNO Really Using?

An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) doesn’t own its network — it leases capacity from Telstra, Optus, or TPG/Vodafone. The host network determines your coverage, speed, and 5G access. We track all 21 Australian MVNOs so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Understanding MVNOs

What is an MVNO?

An MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) is a mobile provider that doesn’t own its own network infrastructure. Instead, it leases wholesale access from one of Australia’s three physical network operators: Telstra, Optus, or TPG/Vodafone. MVNOs typically offer lower prices because they have lower overheads — no towers to maintain.

Does the host network matter?

Yes, significantly. Your host network determines: your geographic coverage area, maximum download and upload speeds, whether you get 5G access, and call quality in fringe areas. Two MVNOs with the same price and data allowance can deliver very different real-world experiences depending on their host network.

Price vs Coverage Trade-off

MVNOs on the Telstra network generally offer the widest coverage (98%+) but may cost more than those on Optus or TPG/Vodafone. If you live and work in a metro area, a cheaper MVNO on any network may perform identically. If you travel to regional areas, Telstra-backed MVNOs offer a clear advantage.
